SPAR Whole Almonds are a staple snack item within the SPAR private label range. The brand originated in the Netherlands in 1932, founded by Adriaan van Well under the name DESPAR (Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig), which translates to 'Through United Co-operation All Profit Regularly.' The name was eventually shortened to SPAR, which also means 'fir tree' in Dutch, hence the iconic green tree logo.
As a retail voluntary chain, SPAR operates differently than a standard corporation; it is a global federation of independently owned and operated retailers and wholesalers who work together under the SPAR brand. Manufacturing for primary products like nuts is typically outsourced to regional suppliers, meaning the almonds themselves are sourced from multiple countries depending on seasonal availability and local market distribution. The brand is managed centrally by SPAR International, which oversees the brand's presence across more than 48 countries while allowing local entities like SPAR Scotland or SPAR South Africa to manage their own local supply chains and distributions.
