Gevalia is a renowned Nordic coffee brand with deep roots in Sweden, where it was founded in 1853 by Victor Theodor Engwall in the town of Gävle. The name 'Gevalia' is actually the Latin translation of Gävle. For generations, it became the largest coffee roastery in Scandinavia and a purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden. In the mid-20th century, the brand was acquired by General Foods (later Kraft Foods), which helped introduce the Swedish coffee tradition to North America.
Today, Gevalia is owned by JDE Peet's, a global coffee and tea powerhouse formed from the merger of Jacobs Douwe Egberts and Peet's Coffee. While the brand maintains its historical and production core in Sweden, specifically at its historic roastery in Gävle, the ownership is headquartered in the Netherlands. This specific organic (Økologisk) dark medium roast is tailored for the Danish and Swedish markets, carrying certification marks like KRAV and the EU organic leaf, reflecting the brand's commitment to sustainable sourcing.
