Coles is one of Australia's largest and most iconic grocery retailers, tracing its origins back to 1914 when George Coles opened the first 'Coles Variety Store' in Collingwood, Melbourne. Today, the Coles brand represents a vast private-label portfolio ranging from everyday essentials to premium gourmet ranges, serving millions of Australians weekly.

While Coles sources roughly 96% of its fresh fruit and vegetables and 100% of its fresh meat from Australian producers, its manufactured grocery products are sourced both locally and globally. The company prioritizes Australian-made goods where possible to support local farmers and industry, though some specialty items and shelf-stable products are manufactured internationally to ensure variety and competitive pricing.

Historically, Coles was a major division of the Wesfarmers conglomerate. However, in November 2018, Coles Group was spun off into an independent, publicly traded company on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). This transition allowed the brand to focus exclusively on its retail and supply chain operations, maintaining its headquarters in Melbourne, Australia.
