The Yakuza series, now officially known globally as Like a Dragon, is a premier video game franchise that debuted in 2005 on the PlayStation 2. Developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio under the umbrella of SEGA, the series is renowned for its cinematic storytelling, deep exploration of Japanese criminal underworld culture, and detailed representations of real-world urban districts like Shinjuku's Kabukicho (reimagined as Kamurocho).
Originally conceived by Toshihiro Nagoshi, the brand has evolved from a niche Japanese crime drama into a global powerhouse. While the creative development and core production occur primarily at SEGA's headquarters in Japan, the physical manufacturing of game discs and distribution of digital content are handled across multiple global regions to cater to international markets. The brand underwent a significant transition recently to align its Western naming convention with its original Japanese title, 'Ryu ga Gotoku,' which translates to 'Like a Dragon.'
Ownership of the franchise remains firmly with SEGA, a titan of the gaming industry. Following corporate restructuring over the decades, the series is now a key intellectual property of Sega Sammy Holdings. The franchise continues to expand its footprint through diverse media, including live-action adaptations and spin-off titles, maintaining its status as a staple of modern gaming culture.
