Dole is one of the world's most recognized fruit brands, with a history dating back to 1851 in Hawaii when James Dole founded the Hawaiian Pineapple Company. For over a century, the brand became synonymous with tropical fruit, particularly pineapples grown in the volcanic soil of Hawaii.

Today, the manufacturing of Dole canned pineapple products occurs in multiple countries across the globe to ensure year-round availability. Major production hubs include the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia, which have replaced Hawaii as the primary centers for pineapple cultivation and canning due to favorable climate and economic conditions.

The ownership structure of Dole has evolved significantly. In 2012, the Dole Food Company sold its worldwide packaged foods and Asia fresh produce businesses to the Japanese conglomerate Itochu Corporation. This branch of the brand, which includes canned fruit like the pineapple pieces shown, is now operated by Dole Packaged Foods, which is owned by Itochu. This makes the brand Japanese-owned, though it maintains its historic American identity and headquarters for the packaged food division in the United States.
