Sanpellegrino Chinotto is a bitter-sweet sparkling beverage that has attained cult status among soda enthusiasts. Its origins trace back to the early 1950s in Italy, where it was developed using extracts from sun-ripened chinotto oranges grown in the Mediterranean. These small, bitter citrus fruits give the drink its distinctive dark brown color and complex aroma, which is often flavored with a blend of 20 herbs, including rhubarb and cinnamon.

The brand was founded by the Sanpellegrino company, which has been synonymous with premium Italian mineral water and carbonated drinks since its establishment in 1899. While the brand remains deeply rooted in Italian heritage and continues to manufacture its products in its home country, its corporate ownership shifted in the late 20th century.

Today, Sanpellegrino is a major subsidiary of Nestlé. The Swiss multinational acquired the company in 1998 to strengthen its position in the global bottled water and premium beverage market. Despite the global ownership, the production and sourcing of the chinotto citrus remain tied to Italian territory to maintain the authenticity of its flavor profile.
