Tête de Moine is a traditional Swiss cheese with a history dating back over 800 years, originally created by monks at Bellelay Abbey. The name translates to 'Monk's Head,' referring to the unique way the cheese is shaved into thin, flower-like rosettes rather than sliced. This specific product is part of the 'Fromagerie d'Emmi' line, which represents one of the most prominent exporters of Swiss dairy products worldwide.
Today, the Emmi brand is the flagship of Emmi AG, the largest milk processor in Switzerland. While the brand has global reach, the production of Tête de Moine AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée) is strictly regulated and must occur within the mountain dairies of the Jura region in Switzerland to maintain its protected status. The ultimate ownership remains with Emmi AG, which is headquartered in Lucerne and majority-owned by the Central Switzerland Milk Producers cooperative.
