Kavli is a historic Norwegian brand founded in 1893 by Olav Kavli in Bergen, Norway. The brand achieved international fame in 1924 when Kavli invented the world's first shelf-stable spreadable cheese, marketed under the Primula brand. Today, the Kavli Group operates as a multinational food producer with a diverse portfolio that includes spreadable cheeses, caviar, mayonnaise, sauces, and crackers.
Manufacturing for Kavli products is spread across Northern Europe and the United Kingdom, with key production facilities located in Norway (Eidsvoll), Sweden (Älvsjö and Eslöv), Finland (Turku), and the UK (Gateshead). This regional manufacturing approach allows the brand to maintain high quality and serve local markets efficiently.
Kavli is unique in its corporate structure; since 1962, it has been owned by the Kavli Trust (Kavlifondet). As a foundation-owned company, all profits that are not reinvested in the business are donated to charitable causes, including humanitarian work, scientific research, and culture. This philanthropic mission is a central pillar of the brand's identity into 2026 and beyond.
