Suttons is one of the most venerable names in British gardening, with a history dating back to 1806 when it was founded by John Sutton in Reading, England. Originally known as Sutton & Sons, the company gained global fame for its high-quality vegetable and flower seeds, eventually receiving a Royal Warrant to supply the British Royal Household, an honor it still holds today.

Over the centuries, the brand evolved from a family business into a modern horticultural leader. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, ownership underwent several transitions, including being part of the French seed group Vilmorin-Mikado (part of the Limagrain Group). However, in 2014, Suttons returned to British ownership following a management buyout. In late 2020, the brand was acquired by Mr. Fothergill’s Seeds, creating a powerhouse in the UK gardening market.

Today, Suttons operates as part of the Mr. Fothergill’s Seeds group. While the company is deeply rooted in the UK—where much of its testing, trials, and packing occur—seed production is a global endeavor. To ensure the highest seed viability and quality, different varieties are grown in climates best suited to their specific needs, though the brand remains quintessentially British in identity and management.
