The brand itself was founded in 1975 by James Jannard in Southern California, initially operating out of a garage.

While Oakley was originally an independent American company, it was acquired in 2007 by the Italian eyewear giant Luxottica. In 2018, Luxottica merged with the French lens manufacturer Essilor to form EssilorLuxottica, which remains the ultimate owner today. This conglomerate manages a massive portfolio of luxury and sport eyewear brands. Most high-end Oakley performance models like the Encoder continue to be assembled or manufactured at the brand's 'One Icon' headquarters in California, though smaller components and lifestyle frames may be sourced from international facilities in Italy, China, or Brazil.
