Bluesky Social

Bluesky is a decentralized social media platform and a public benefit corporation based in the United States. It originated as an internal project within Twitter in 2019, spearheaded by Jack Dorsey, before becoming an independent entity in 2021. The platform is built on the AT Protocol (Authenticated Transfer Protocol), an open-source framework designed to allow for interoperability and user-owned data across different social networks.

While Bluesky was incubated by Twitter, it has evolved into a completely separate company with its own funding and governance. The platform gained significant traction as an alternative to X (formerly Twitter) due to its emphasis on decentralization, algorithmic choice, and moderation transparency. Development and server maintenance primarily take place within the United States, utilizing distributed cloud infrastructure to serve its global user base.
