The 'Blue Willow' pattern is one of the most iconic and enduring designs in the history of ceramics. Although it features a romanticised Chinese landscape—including pagodas, willow trees, and a bridge—the pattern was actually developed in England during the late 18th century. It emerged as a result of the 'Chinoiserie' trend where European manufacturers sought to satisfy the high demand for Chinese porcelain aesthetics.

While Josiah Spode is often credited with perfecting the blue underglaze transfer printing process for this pattern around 1790, many other Staffordshire potteries produced their own versions. Today, the design is produced globally by various companies, though it remains a hallmark of traditional British pottery history. Ownership of the most famous brands associated with the pattern, such as Spode and Royal Worcester, currently resides under the Portmeirion Group.
