Joplin note-taking application

Joplin is a free, open-source note-taking and to-do application that was first released in 2017 by Laurent Cozic. The application was born out of a desire to create a secure, Markdown-based alternative to proprietary services like Evernote. It is designed to handle a large volume of notes organized into notebooks, allowing for multimedia attachments, web clipping, and synchronization across various platforms including Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.

While the software itself is built by a global community of open-source contributors, its commercial services and cloud infrastructure—known as Joplin Cloud—are managed by a formal entity. Originally started in the United Kingdom, the project's commercial operations moved to France in 2022 to benefit from strict European Union privacy laws. The project is headquartered in Nancy, France, where Laurent Cozic continues to lead its development.

As an open-source tool, 'manufacturing' in a traditional sense does not apply; instead, its code is developed and maintained by individuals around the world. The ownership of the trademark and the Joplin Cloud service resides with the French company Joplin (also referred to as Joplin Cloud Co Ltd), ensuring that the project remains independent and focused on user privacy and data ownership.
