Founded in 1880 by brothers John, William, and Thomas Loake, Loake Shoemakers has become synonymous with traditional British craftsmanship. The brand is particularly famous for its professional and high-end footwear collections, many of which utilize the Goodyear Welted construction method, a hallmark of quality that allows shoes to be repaired and resoled over decades.
While the brand maintains its historic factory in Wood Street, Kettering, Northamptonshire, it has expanded its manufacturing operations to meet global demand. Higher-end collections like the '1880 Classic' are exclusively made in the UK, while other lines, such as the 'Professional' and 'Lifestyle' ranges, may be produced in the company's dedicated facilities in India. This dual-manufacturing strategy allows the brand to maintain quality standards while offering a wider price range.
Ownership has remained remarkably consistent throughout its history. Loake continues to be an independent, family-run business, currently managed by the fourth and fifth generations of the Loake family. As of 2026, the company remains under the control of Loake Bros Ltd, preserving its heritage as one of the last remaining traditional family shoemakers in the historic Northamptonshire shoe cluster.
