Häagen-Dazs is an iconic ice cream brand known for its premium quality and sophisticated branding. Despite the Danish-sounding name, which was invented by its founders to convey an aura of old-world European craftsmanship, the brand actually originated in the Bronx, New York. It was founded in 1960 by Reuben and Rose Mattus, who initially launched with only three flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and coffee.
Today, the manufacturing of Häagen-Dazs is a global operation. Products sold in North America are generally produced in the United States, while most international markets, including Europe and Asia, are supplied by a major production facility in Tilloy-lès-Mofflaines, France. Ownership of the brand is split: General Mills owns the brand globally, but in the United States and Canada, it is operated under a long-term license by Froneri, a joint venture between Nestlé and PAI Partners.
