Becel is a pioneer in the vegetable-based spreads market, originally developed in the 1960s by Unilever in the Netherlands as a heart-healthy alternative to butter. The name 'Becel' is derived from the acronym BCL (Blood Cholesterol Lowering).

In 2018, Unilever sold its global spreads division (including Becel and Flora) to KKR, which formed a new company called Upfield. Upfield is now the world's leading producer of plant-based spreads and cheeses. While the brand was founded in the Netherlands, it is now produced in various manufacturing facilities globally, including major sites in the Netherlands and Germany, to serve local European markets like Denmark and the Nordic region.
