Tropicana was founded in 1947 by Anthony T. Rossi in Bradenton, Florida. Initially starting as a gift box company shipping fresh fruit, Rossi pioneered a flash pasteurization process in 1954 that allowed for the mass distribution of chilled, fresh-squeezed orange juice. This innovation transformed Tropicana into a global household name synonymous with high-quality, 100% pure juice products.
Tropicana juices are produced across multiple countries to maintain freshness and meet regional demand. While significant volumes of oranges are sourced and processed in Florida (USA) and Brazil, the final bottling and distribution often happen in local facilities. For products sold in European and international markets, production typically occurs at regional processing hubs geared toward the specific needs of those territories.
For many years, Tropicana was a prominent part of PepsiCo's portfolio. However, in late 2021, PepsiCo entered into an agreement to sell a majority stake in its juice brands to PAI Partners, a leading private equity firm. This resulted in the formation of Tropicana Brands Group, a joint venture where PAI Partners holds the controlling interest while PepsiCo retains a minority stake and distribution rights in various regions. The company remains headquartered in the United States, continuing its legacy as a leader in the chilled juice category.
