Philishave is the historic brand name for the rotary electric shavers produced by the Dutch electronics giant Philips. Originally introduced in 1939, it revolutionized personal grooming by moving away from traditional straight-blade shaving methods in favor of a rotating cutter system. For decades, the name Philishave was a household staple across Europe and much of the world, distinguishing the company's circular blades from the foil shavers produced by competitors.
Over the years, manufacturing shifted as the brand expanded. Historically, the primary manufacturing hub was in Drachten, Netherlands, where the company established a massive production facility in the 1950s. While Drachten remains a high-end development and production center today, many product lines have been manufactured in various global locations, including China and Indonesia, to meet international demand.
In terms of branding, the 'Philishave' label was phased out in the early 2000s in favor of the unified 'Philips' brand name to streamline global marketing efforts. However, the product's legacy continues as part of Philips' extensive Personal Health portfolio. The ultimate owner remains the Dutch multinational, Koninklijke Philips N.V., which has shifted its focus heavily toward healthcare and health-tech while maintaining its dominance in the male grooming sector.
