Tiger Balm is one of the world's most recognizable topical pain relief brands, featuring a potent herbal formulation that has been used for over a century. The brand's origin dates back to the late 1870s when herbalist Aw Chu Kin developed the unique ointment in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar). Following his passing, his sons Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par moved the business to Singapore, where they perfected the recipe and successfully marketed it under the name Tiger Balm.
Today, Tiger Balm is manufactured in several countries to meet global demand, including Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Despite its widespread production, the core identity of the brand remains deeply rooted in its Singaporean heritage. The Red Ointment variant, specifically shown in the image, is known for its warming effect and is frequently used to alleviate muscular aches, joint pain, and insect bites.
Since the mid-20th century, the brand has been under the ownership of Haw Par Corporation Limited, a publicly listed company headquartered in Singapore. Haw Par oversees the global distribution and licensing of Tiger Balm products. In the Australian market, the product is often distributed through local health and pharmaceutical channels while maintaining its distinct, traditional branding and AUST L therapeutic registration.
