Fireflower is a specialized software toolchain designed for the modification and patching of Nintendo DS video games. Unlike traditional patchers that modify files in-place, Fireflower utilizes a more robust methodology by extracting the ROM, compiling code into special sections, and rebuilding the executable to ensure stability and compatibility across both ARM9 and ARM7 processors.
The project originated within the homebrew and ROM hacking community, specifically developed to solve technical limitations in older modifying tools. It is characterized by its use of the ELF file format to handle hooking symbols, making it a powerful resource for developers looking to add complex new features to legacy handheld titles. As an open-source project, it does not follow traditional corporate manufacturing or commercial product distribution models.
