Google Docs is a cloud-based word processing software launched as part of the Google Docs & Spreadsheets service. Its origins trace back to 2006 when Google acquired Writely, a web-based text editor developed by software company Upstartle. Following the acquisition, Google integrated Writely into its ecosystem, eventually evolving it into the collaborative tool recognized today as part of the Google Workspace suite.
As a software-as-a-service (SaaS) product, Google Docs does not have a physical manufacturing location; however, its primary development, infrastructure management, and data hosting are spearheaded by Google’s engineering teams in the United States and dispersed globally across Google's massive data center network. The brand remains under the terminal ownership of Alphabet Inc., the parent conglomerate formed in 2015 to manage Google's diverse portfolio of technology interests.
