The brand was created by Dr. Albert Wander based on a nutritious malt extract formula. While the beverage powder is sold globally, the 'Crunchy Cream' spread variant is particularly iconic and remains primarily produced in Switzerland to maintain its specific recipe and quality standards.

Following its long history as a family business, the Wander AG company was acquired several times. Since 2002, the brand has been under the ownership of Associated British Foods (ABF). However, due to licensing history, Nestlé holds the rights to the brand in the United States.
