Alpro is a pioneering brand in the plant-based food industry, originally founded in 1980 in Wevelgem, Belgium. The company started as a subsidiary of the Vandemoortele Group, focusing on sustainable nutrition through soya-based products. Over the decades, it expanded its portfolio to include almonds, oats, hazelnuts, and rice, becoming a European leader in the dairy alternative market.
In 2017, Alpro was acquired by the French multinational food-products corporation Danone as part of its acquisition of WhiteWave Foods. Today, Danone manages Alpro as a key brand within its essential dairy and plant-based (EDP) division. While its roots and primary manufacturing facility remain in Belgium (notably in Wevelgem), the brand's production has expanded to other European sites to meet international demand, reinforced by Danone's global supply chain.
