Public Power Corporation S.A., commonly known as PPC or DEI (Dimósia Epicheírisi Ilektrismoú), is the largest power supplier and generator in Greece. Established in 1950 by the Greek government, it was created to unify the fragmented local power grids into a single national energy infrastructure. For decades, it operated as a state-owned monopoly responsible for lignite mining, electricity generation, and distribution across the Hellenic Republic.
In recent years, PPC has undergone significant transformation as part of the European energy market liberalization. The company has shifted its focus from coal-based generation toward renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, and hydroelectric power. While it remains headquartered in Athens and serves as the primary energy provider for Greek households and businesses, its ownership structure has evolved through privatization processes and public listings on the Athens Stock Exchange.
Today, PPC is a vertically integrated energy company with a growing presence in the Balkans, notably through acquisitions in Romania. It remains a cornerstone of the Greek economy, managed as a public company with a mix of state and private institutional investment, ensuring the energy security of the region while transitioning toward a sustainable, green energy future.
