Birkenstock is a globally recognized footwear brand traces its roots back to 1774 when Johann Adam Birkenstock was registered as a 'subject and shoemaker' in the local church archives of Langen-Bergheim, Germany. The brand became famous for its invention of the contoured footbed, a design meant to mimic the natural shape of the human foot and provide unparalleled anatomical support. This innovation transformed the brand from a small family business into a global wellness footwear leader.
While the brand remained family-owned for over two centuries, it underwent a significant transformation in the early 21st century. In 2021, the majority of the company was acquired by the private equity firm L Catterton and the family office of Bernard Arnault (Agache), the chairman of LVMH. Despite this shift in ownership to a French-American investment group, the brand maintains its deep core identity as a German manufacturer.
Birkenstock is notable for its commitment to domestic manufacturing. Unlike many global footwear brands that outsource production to Asia, Birkenstock produces the vast majority of its products in its own production facilities located in Germany. This includes sites in Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Hesse, and Bavaria, ensuring that the legacy of German craftsmanship remains central to the brand's premium positioning.
