Dr. Martens, often called 'Doc Martens', is an iconic British footwear brand that traces its technical origins to Germany. The distinctive air-cushioned sole was invented by Dr. Klaus Märtens following a skiing injury in 1945. The brand evolved into its current global form when the Griggs family, a British shoemaking firm, acquired the patent rights and launched the first '1460' boot in 1960.
Today, the brand is widely recognized for its yellow stitching and 'AirWair' heel loops. While the higher-end 'Made in England' collection is still produced in the original Wollaston factory, the vast majority of production occurs in Asia to meet global demand. The brand is currently owned by the British private equity firm Permira, which took the company public on the London Stock Exchange.
