Founded in 1969 by Paul Iams in the United States, the brand's name was inspired by a term used in the era of jazz to denote 'the tops' or 'the best'. The brand has a long history of being at the forefront of pet nutritional science.

Over the decades, the brand's ownership has transitioned through major global corporations. Originally part of the Iams Company, it was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 1999. In 2014, Mars, Incorporated acquired the Eukanuba brand in most global markets (including North America, Latin America, and Europe), while Spectrum Brands acquired the European division specifically for some time before Mars eventually consolidated much of the global business. For products sold in Europe, manufacturing primarily takes place in specialized facilities in the Netherlands.
