Macpac is a renowned outdoor brand that traces its heritage back to 1973 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Founded by Bruce Heine, the brand initially gained fame for designing high-quality, durable hiking packs that could withstand the rugged conditions of the Southern Alps. Over the decades, Macpac expanded its range to include technical apparel, sleeping bags, and tents, becoming a staple for adventurers across Australasia.

While the brand was originally synonymous with New Zealand manufacturing, the majority of its production moved offshore to specialized facilities in Asia, particularly China and Vietnam, during the early 2000s in order to scale its global operations. Despite this shift in manufacturing, the design and testing phases often remain close to the brand's mountaineering roots.

In 2018, Macpac underwent a significant corporate change when it was acquired by the Super Retail Group, one of Australasia’s largest retailers. This acquisition integrated Macpac into a portfolio that includes major brands like BCF and Supercheap Auto, positioning the brand for continued growth throughout the 2020s and beyond while maintaining its headquarters in Australia and New Zealand.
