CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, is a fundamental technology of the World Wide Web, used for describing the presentation of a document written in a markup language like HTML. It was first proposed by Håkon Wium Lie in 1994 and has since evolved through various versions, with CSS3 being the current modular standard managed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Unlike traditional physical products, CSS is a language specification. It is developed and maintained by an international community within the W3C, which ensures cross-platform compatibility and open standards. The 'manufacturing' of CSS happens through collaborative working groups and is implemented globally by browser developers like Google, Mozilla, and Apple.
While the original concept was born in Europe, CSS is now an open, license-free standard. It is not owned by a single corporation, though its development is overseen by the W3C, an international consortium led by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. This ensures that the web remains an open ecosystem for developers and users worldwide.
