Founded in 1993 by Rob Roskopp, Mike Marquez, and Rich Novak in a small garage in Santa Cruz, California, the brand's first model was the Tazmon, a dual-suspension bike that challenged the industry's hardtail norms. A pivotal moment for the brand came in the early 2000s when they acquired the rights to the Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension system, a design that remains the cornerstone of their modern bicycle architecture.

While the company maintains its soul and headquarters in California, its manufacturing process is global. The high-tech carbon fiber and aluminum frames are fabricated in specialized facilities in China and Taiwan to meet rigorous engineering standards. In 2015, the brand transitioned from its original founders and owners to become part of Pon Holdings, a massive Dutch conglomerate. Under Pon's ownership, Santa Cruz has continued to expand its lineup to include gravel bikes like the Stigmata and high-performance electric mountain bikes (e-bikes) like the Heckler.
