Shalimar is widely considered the world's first 'Oriental' (now often termed as Ambery) fragrance. Created by Jacques Guerlain in 1921 and officially launched in 1925 at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, it was inspired by the legendary love story of Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal, for whom the Taj Mahal and the Shalimar Gardens were built. The scent's signature is a heavy dose of ethylvanillin mixed atop the classic 'Guerlinade' base, resulting in a timeless blend of bergamot, iris, and vanilla.
Throughout its century-long history, the production of Shalimar has remained deeply rooted in French craftsmanship. The fragrance is manufactured in France, specifically at Guerlain's production sites such as the facility in Orphin. For decades, the iconic fan-shaped bottle was produced by the prestigious crystal maker Baccarat. Today, while the Guerlain family no longer owns the business, the brand maintains its luxury heritage under the stewardship of the LVMH group, ensuring the fragrance remains a flagship of French perfumery.
