Cobra Beer is a globally recognized brand originally conceived in 1989 by Karan Bilimoria and Arjun Reddy. The brand was founded in Fulham, London, with the specific intent of creating a smooth, less gassy lager that would pair perfectly with Indian cuisine and curry. Initially, the beer was brewed in Bangalore, India, and imported to the UK, but due to rising costs and logistics, production was moved closer to its primary market.
Today, the vast majority of Cobra Beer consumed in Europe is manufactured in the United Kingdom, specifically under license at breweries such as those in Burton-upon-Trent. In the Indian market, it continues to be produced locally. The brand's unique recipe uses a blend of barley malt, rice, maize, and three varieties of hops to achieve its characteristic texture.
In terms of ownership, the brand entered a significant joint venture in 2009. While Lord Bilimoria remains the founding chairman, the majority control of the brand is held by Molson Coors Beverage Company. This partnership allows Cobra to utilize the massive distribution and production networks of one of the world's largest brewing corporations while maintaining its distinct identity as the premier accompaniment for international cuisine.
