Cafédirect Mayan Gold is a premium ground coffee product sourced from organic farms in Mexico. The brand is a pioneer in the ethical coffee industry, known for being the first coffee brand in the United Kingdom to carry the Fairtrade mark. The 'Mayan Gold' variant is specifically noted for its smooth, dark roast profile with distinct caramel sweetness, reflecting the high-altitude growing conditions of the Mexican regions from which it is harvested.
The brand was established in 1991 through a collaborative effort by four UK-based organizations: Oxfam, Traidcraft, Equal Exchange, and Twin Trading. This unique origin was a response to the 1989 collapse of the International Coffee Agreement, which had caused global coffee prices to plummet. While the raw beans are sourced from producer cooperatives in Mexico, the final roasting and packaging processes are primarily conducted in the United Kingdom to maintain quality and freshness for the British market.
Today, Cafédirect remains an independent, mission-led social enterprise. It is majority-owned by producer cooperatives and charitable trusts, ensuring that a significant portion of profits is reinvested directly into the farming communities. Its ultimate owner is Cafédirect PLC, which operates as a Public Limited Company headquartered in London, upholding its status as a B Corp certified business committed to environmental and social transparency.
