Ovomaltine, known as Ovaltine in many markets, is a world-renowned malt beverage brand with deep Swiss roots. It was originally developed in 1904 by pharmacist Dr. Albert Wander in Bern, Switzerland. The product was initially created as a nutritional supplement to address common deficiencies, combining malt extract, egg, milk, and cocoa. Over the decades, it evolved from a health tonic into a popular breakfast and sports beverage celebrated for its energy-providing properties.
While the brand is sold globally, the products distributed in Germany and Switzerland, such as 'Ovomaltine Der Klassiker,' are primarily manufactured at the Wander AG production facility in Neuenegg, Switzerland. The brand's ownership has transitioned through several major corporations; it was acquired by Sandoz (now Novartis) in 1967 and later sold to Associated British Foods (ABF) in 2002. Today, ABF manages the brand globally, though the specific Swiss subsidiary, Wander AG, continues to oversee the original Swiss heritage production and local distribution.
