Sopalin is an iconic French brand of paper towels, so synonymous with the product in France that the brand name is frequently used as a generic term (a genericized trademark). The name itself is an acronym derived from the original manufacturer, 'Société du Papier Linge'.
Originally launched in 1948 by the French company Kimberly-Clark (via a local joint venture), the brand has undergone several changes in ownership. Today, it is part of the Sofidel Group, an Italian multinational paper producer. While the brand remains deeply rooted in the French market with most production occurring in French facilities like those in Frouard, the ultimate management and strategic direction come from the Sofidel headquarters in Italy.
