CeraVe was founded in 2005 by researchers in the United States who focused on the importance of the skin barrier. The brand revolutionized the market by being the first to incorporate a blend of three essential ceramides (1, 3, and 6-II), fatty acids, and other lipids, delivered through a patented Multivesicular Emulsion (MVE) technology. This system ensures a controlled release of ingredients for long-lasting hydration.

Initially launched under Coria Laboratories, the brand was later part of Valeant Pharmaceuticals before being acquired by L'Oréal in 2017. Since the acquisition, L'Oréal has expanded CeraVe's distribution to over 60 countries, positioning it within its Active Cosmetics Division (now L'Oréal Dermatological Beauty). While the brand originated as a U.S. drugstore staple, it has become a global dermatological powerhouse.

Manufacturing for CeraVe products takes place in several locations to meet global demand. Products sold in North America are primarily manufactured in the United States and Canada, while supplies for the European and Asian markets are often produced in France and other L'Oréal facilities worldwide.
