Briar is a unique communication platform designed for activists, journalists, and anyone requiring secure, decentralised communication. Unlike traditional messaging apps, it does not rely on a central server; instead, it synchronises messages directly between users' devices via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or the Tor network. This architecture makes it highly resistant to surveillance and internet shutdowns.
The project originated as an open-source initiative to provide a secure tool for civil society. It is developed by a distributed team of privacy advocates and software engineers. Because it is open-source software, the 'production' of its code happens globally across various contributors, although the core development is coordinated through a non-profit structure in Europe. The project is funded largely through grants from organisations focused on digital rights and internet freedom.
