Balter Brewing Company was founded in 2016 by a group of close friends, including professional surfers Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Bede Durbidge, and Josh Kerr. Originating in Currumbin on Queensland's Gold Coast, the brand quickly became a standout in the Australian craft beer scene, known for its focus on quality, community, and a 'work hard, play hard' philosophy. Balter Cerveza is their take on a crisp, easy-drinking Mexican-style lager, designed for the Australian climate.
In December 2019, Balter Brewing Company was acquired by Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), which was at the time part of the international brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev. In 2020, CUB was subsequently sold to Asahi Beverages, the Australian and New Zealand arm of the Japanese multinational Asahi Group Holdings.
Despite the acquisition by a global beverage powerhouse, Balter Cerveza continues to be manufactured in Australia. The flagship brewery in Currumbin remains a central hub for the brand, while larger distribution needs are supported by Asahi's Australian network. Under the ultimate ownership of Asahi Group Holdings based in Tokyo, Balter continues to operate as a key premium brand within CUB’s extensive Australian portfolio.
