MEPC refers to the Marine Environment Protection Committee, which is the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) senior technical body on marine pollution-related matters. These documents, such as circulars and guidelines, are drafted and published to help shipowners, flag administrations, and technical bodies comply with international environmental treaties like MARPOL.
The committee was established following the 1973 MARPOL convention to address the prevention and control of pollution from ships. While the intellectual content is developed by member states and expert panels globally, the physical coordination, official publishing, and distribution of these regulatory documents are managed by the IMO Secretariat located in London. The documents provide standardized methods for measuring ship performance, fuel density, and carbon intensity (EEXI/EEDI), ensuring a uniform global approach to maritime decarbonization.
