Hotmail, famously stylized as HoTMaiL to highlight its use of HTML, was one of the world's first free webmail services. Launched on July 4, 1996, the date was symbolically chosen to represent 'independence' from ISP-based email. It revolutionized digital communication by allowing users to access their inbox from any computer with an internet connection.
Following its rapid growth, the service was acquired by Microsoft in 1997, becoming a central pillar of the MSN suite of services. Over the decades, the platform underwent numerous rebrands, eventually transitioning into Outlook.com to align with Microsoft's professional productivity software. Today, it remains a major global email provider, integrated deeply into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem and hosted across Microsoft's international network of data centers, with primary operations and development based in the United States.
