Napapijri is a premium Italian apparel brand that has become a staple of global streetwear and outdoor fashion. Founded in 1987 in Aosta, Italy, by Giuliana Rosset, the brand originally focused on high-quality travel bags made from waxed cotton canvas. The name itself is a variation of the Finnish word 'napapiiri', which means 'Arctic Circle', reflecting the brand's association with extreme climates and polar exploration. Despite its Italian roots and Finnish name, the brand famously features a Norwegian flag on its products as a tribute to the heroism of Norwegian polar explorers like Roald Amundsen.
In 2004, the brand was acquired by the American apparel giant VF Corporation, joining a portfolio that includes other major labels like The North Face and Vans. While the brand's identity and design heritage remain deeply Italian, its operations are global. Manufacturing takes place in multiple countries, including Vietnam, Turkey, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, with specialized technical products like the Circular Series often traced to advanced textile mills in Taiwan and assembly units in Malaysia. Today, the brand is headquartered in Stabio, Switzerland, and continues to be managed as a subsidiary of VF Corporation.
