Alpro is a pioneering brand in the plant-based food industry, best known for its range of dairy-free alternatives. The company was founded in Belgium in 1980 by Philippe Vandemoortele, originally as part of the Vandemoortele Group. It quickly became a leader in the European market for soy-based products before expanding into other varieties like almond, oat, and coconut.
The brand has undergone significant ownership changes over the last decade. Historically owned by WhiteWave Foods, it became part of the Danone family following Danone's acquisition of WhiteWave in 2017. Today, Alpro is a core component of Danone's plant-based strategy. Manufacturing is spread across several specialized facilities in Europe, including primary sites in Wevelgem, Belgium, and Issenheim, France, to serve the high demand in the European Union and beyond.
