Visa is a global leader in digital payments, facilitating transactions between consumers, merchants, financial institutions, and government entities across more than 200 countries and territories. Originally launched in 1958 as the BankAmericard credit card program by Bank of America, it was the first program of its kind to offer a revolving credit feature.

In 1976, the brand was officially renamed Visa to create a globally recognizable and easily pronounceable name. The company transitioned into its current corporate structure through a series of mergers of several bank-owned entities, culminating in a historic global reorganization and initial public offering (IPO) in 2008.

While Visa does not issue cards directly to consumers—leaving that to its member financial institutions—it provides the infrastructure for payment processing. Its corporate headquarters remain in San Francisco, California, though it operates a vast network of data centers and regional offices worldwide to support its secure and scalable payment ecosystem.
