The Spendor LS3/5A is a legendary high-fidelity loudspeaker, part of a family of monitors originally designed by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for mobile monitoring and studio use. The brand Spendor was founded in the late 1960s by Spencer and Dorothy Hughes. Spencer Hughes worked in the BBC’s engineering department, where he helped develop the original research that led to the LS3/5A standards.

Following the strict specifications set by the BBC, Spendor was one of the few select manufacturers licensed to produce these units. All genuine Spendor loudspeakers from this era were hand-built in the United Kingdom, specifically at their facility in Hailsham, Sussex.

Today, Spendor remains an independent British audio company. While the ownership shifted in the early 2000s, the brand is currently owned by Philip Swift, who also founded the audio brand Audiolab. The company continues to operate and manufacture its premium audio equipment at its production plant in the UK, maintaining its heritage of British high-end audio engineering.
