Joico was founded in 1975 by hair stylist Sara Jones in Southern California. The brand gained international acclaim for being one of the first professional salon brands to utilize keratin protein to repair hair structure, leading to the development of its iconic K-Pak line.

After decades of growth, the brand underwent significant ownership changes. It was acquired by the Japanese beauty giant Shiseido Group in 2002. However, in late 2017, the brand was sold to Henkel, a German multinational company known for its strong portfolio of consumer and professional goods. Today, Joico operates under the Henkel Consumer Brands umbrella, maintaining its reputation as a leader in professional salon-quality hair treatment and color technology.

Manufacturing primarily takes place in the United States to serve the North American market, though Henkel utilizes its global network of facilities to distribute and produce components for the brand worldwide.
