Van Nelle is an iconic Dutch brand, originally founded in Rotterdam in 1782 by Johannes van Nelle. Historically recognized for its coffee, tea, and tobacco, the brand became a steeple of Dutch industrial heritage, particularly famous for the Van Nelle Factory (Van Nellefabriek), which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Over the centuries, the ownership of the tobacco division transitioned through various major industry players. Following a series of acquisitions, the tobacco brand was acquired by Imperial Brands (formerly Imperial Tobacco) in July 1998 as part of its acquisition of the tobacco division of the Dutch company Douwe Egberts. Today, Van Nelle remains one of the most popular brands for rolling tobacco (shag) in Europe, especially the 'Zware' (Heavy) and 'Halfzware' (Half-heavy) varieties.

While the brand's heart remains in the Netherlands, manufacturing has been centralized under Imperial Brands' global supply chain, which operates facilities across multiple European nations. The product shown features German health warnings, indicating it was packaged for the German market.
