HEMA is an iconic Dutch retail chain founded in Amsterdam in 1926 by Leo Meyer and Arthur Isaac. Originally established as the 'Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam' (Dutch Unit Price Company Amsterdam), it revolutionized shopping by offering products at fixed, low prices. The brand is deeply embedded in Dutch culture, known for its minimalist design, private-label products, and everyday essentials ranging from food items like their famous 'rookworst' to office supplies and textiles.

Today, HEMA operates as a private company following several ownership changes. After being owned by various investment firms such as Lion Capital and Marcel Boekhoorn, HEMA was acquired in early 2021 by a consortium consisting of the Van Eerd family (owners of the Jumbo supermarket chain) and the investment company Parcom. This acquisition brought the company back into Dutch hands, focusing on long-term stability and sustainable growth across its international markets in Europe and beyond.
