Lithium-ion Battery

Modern lithium-ion battery technology was fundamentally pioneered in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The invention is largely credited to the collaborative and independent breakthroughs by researchers in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan. Significant milestones include the discovery of the cobalt oxide cathode at the University of Oxford and the development of the carbon-based anode. Commercialization was first successfully achieved in 1991 in Japan, setting the stage for the global mobile electronics revolution.

Today, the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries is a globalized industry with massive production hubs across East Asia, Europe, and North America. While proprietary chemistry and cell designs often belong to multinational technology conglomerates or specialized energy firms, the physical production occurs in 'gigafactories' spread across the globe to meet the demands of the electric vehicle and consumer electronics markets. Ownership of major battery brands remains diverse, ranging from automotive giants to dedicated chemical and electronics manufacturers.
