The original vision was to create home improvement superstores that were larger than any of their competitors' facilities. The first two stores opened in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1979.

While Home Depot is primarily a service and retail brand, its private-label products (such as Husky tools, Glacier Bay plumbing, and Hampton Bay lighting) are manufactured in various locations globally, including the United States, China, Vietnam, and Mexico. The company maintains a massive supply chain to support its thousands of warehouse-style stores.

It remains headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and operates as an independent entity, owning several subsidiary brands like HD Supply and Interline Brands to support its professional and retail consumer base.
