Jacob's Mikado is a classic Irish biscuit that has been a staple of tea times for generations. The treat consists of a soft biscuit base topped with two lines of pink marshmallow, a strip of jam in the center, and a light sprinkling of coconut.
The brand's history dates back to 1851 when William and Robert Jacob founded their biscuit company in Waterford, Ireland. They later moved to Dublin, where they became famous for inventing the Cream Cracker. The Mikado, along with its sister products Kimberley and Coconut Cream, defined the snacks portfolio of the Irish company for over a century.
Today, the brand undergoes complex ownership depending on the region. In Ireland, Jacob's and the Mikado brand are owned and distributed by Valeo Foods. This acquisition occurred in 2011 when Valeo purchased the Jacob Fruitfield Food Group. While the brand remains iconic to Irish culture, manufacturing centralisation means that while many products are produced in Ireland, some biscuits under the wider Jacob's umbrella may be produced in other facilities across Europe.
